KosherTube

Founded in 2007,  KosherTube is the website of the Electronic Torah Educational Foundation, a not-for profit Canadian Corporation.  It has been created by Michael Kigel and David Ostriker to encourage the understanding of Judaism through the use of participatory video. Dr. Kigel is currently Dean of the Jewish Leadership Program at the Lauder Business School, Vienna and is the producer and host of ten seasons of  ”Passages” and “Messages”.  Mr. Ostriker has served on the Executive Committee of the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television, is a past Chair of the Canadian Independent Film Caucus, and brings over forty years of media experience to KosherTube.

KosherTube has been created to inform and educate members of the Jewish community and the general public about the practice of  traditional Judaism and matters related to Israel and Jewish Culture.

Thinking parents – religious and not religious, Jewish and not-Jewish –  know that the Internet can be a dangerous place for children and adults alike.  While we can all agree that the net is a terrific tool for business, research, and communication, we must also admit that the net is filled with Shmutz (the Yiddish word for dirt).   Social-networking and interactive-video sites are tremendously popular, but their content has also ruined marriages, families, and individual lives.  It is sad that a technology with such great potential for good can so easily become a perverse and pernicious presence in our lives.

KosherTube will provide a safe haven on the net for you and your family: an interactive video site that is safe for children (and their parents), with social networking features which are Shmutz-free.

In order to do this we need your participation and a little of your patience.

To encourage your participation, we have given KosherTube many interactive features that will be familiar to those who upload videos to YouTube (or other such sites).  If you have a video of a Kosher Wedding or Bar Mitzvah, a dazzling insight into the weekly Torah portion, or anything else you may want your distant family or your friend next door to see, we invite you to upload it to KosherTube. See to a sample of the lesson from KosherTube - Rabbi Michalowicz  - “The Mesillat Yesharim – Path of the Just“.

Mesillat Yesharim – is an ethical text composed by the Rabbi Moshe Chaim Luzzatto, (“Ramchal” – one of the most brilliant philosophers and Kabbalists of the 18th century).  The aim is the perfection of character. Within each step, Luzzatto explains the step itself, its elements, how it can be acquired, and what might distract from its acquisition.

This class was recorded at The Westmount Learning Center – Westmount Shul & Learning Centre. For more shiurim of  Rabbi Michalowicz  visit  KosherTube.

Im not sure this is what people call participatory video, have a look at the website http://www.insightshare.org, this use of the term participatory video in the context of a site which simply encourages people to upload their own videos is confusing. Participatory Video is a set of techniques to involve a group or community in shaping and creating their own film. The idea behind this is that making a video is easy and accessible, and is a great way of bringing people together to explore issues, voice concerns or simply to be creative and tell stories. This process can be very empowering, enabling a group or community to take action to solve their own problems and also to communicate their needs and ideas to decision-makers and/or other groups and communities. As such, PV can be a highly effective tool to engage and mobilise marginalised people and to help them implement their own forms of sustainable development based on local needs. Good luck with the site though.
