Tashlich is a ceremony performed outside during Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year. Each year (September 09, 2010), many Jews around the world walk to moving water bodies and perform Tashlich, which means “to throw” or “to cast”, and toss small crumbs into the water to be eaten by fish. In this way, they symbolically cast away their sins in the hopes of starting the New Year fresh and guilt free.

Now, with iTashlich, anyone can cast away their sins any time, anywhere.

iTashlich is in English and in Hebrew, depending on your language setting. It explains Tashlich, and contains audio of the main prayer. It also contains the text, in modern Hebrew, of the three main prayers. No more papers blowing in the wind!

But wait, there’s more. iTashlich loosely follows the spirit of Al Cheit, the communal recitation of sins that we say on Yom Kippur. iTashlich offers questions based on “traditional sins”, as well as more modern, “sins-lite”. How will you stack up?

After reviewing the meaning of Tashlich, hearing the Tashlich prayer, and considering some potentially relevant sins, you will experience a personal iTashlich experience designed just for you.

At long last the question will be answered: what happens to all of those crumbs down there?

Written by Rabbi Shlomo Ganzfried (1804-1886) “for G-d fearing Jews who are not in a position to study and comprehend the [original, full] Shulchan Aruch and its commentaries” the Kitzur Shulchan Aruch is the classic concise compendium covering all areas of Halacha. Rabbi Ganzfried expresses his intentions in his introduction:

… [This book] includes from the four sections of the Shulchan Aruch, those necessary and essential laws for all people in Yisrael in order to know them and are written in a simple language and a correct order. It is a good compilation and effective, B’ezrat Hashem, for businessmen that do not have the time to delve into the Shulchan Aruch and its commentaries. They shall find in [this sefer] that which they require with ease and also [be able to] educate the youth and plant in their hearts the commandments of Hashem in their youth and [so that] also in their later life they will not leave them…

The Kitzur became immensely popular after its publication due to its simplicity, and is still popular within Orthodox Judaism, as a framework for study.

There are few apps for iPhone/iPad in AppStore with the Kitzur Shulchan Aruch. You can find there app with just Hebrew text (created by Dovid Zirkind from JewishContent.org; $2.99), Hebrew with English translation (by RustyBrick; $14.99 + $9.99 English Upgrade) and brand new one, Hebrew with Portuguese translation (created by Natan Rolnik). This app is free and was released in memory of David ben Sofia Z”L, Yoel Chaim ben Yehuda Z”L, and Guershon ben Akiva Z”L.

The first translation of the Kitzur Shulchan Aruch to Portuguese was published in 2008 by Rabbi Yossef Benzecry and Maayanot Publishing House in Brasil.

Taharas HaMishpacha, also known as Family Purity, is an extremely important part of Jewish marital life.

This iPhone application will allow you to make this sometimes complex and important part of marriage, a bit easier for you and your family.

The Mikvah application has several key parts to it that aid you in observing the laws of Niddah, Mikvah, Vestos calendar, useful guidelines and more.

Mikvah Includes: Mikva’ot Database, Vestos or Taharas HaMishpacha Schedules, Mikvah Zmanim, Family Purity Guidelines, Mikvah Checklist, Contacts, Privacy with Password Protection.

Mikva’ot Mikvah מקוה

Locating Mikva’ot (Mikvah מקוה) can be a challenge when traveling or even in your home town. We added a GPS based Mikvah database that will help you find the closest Mikvah to your current location. If you want to find a Mikvah somewhere else, just type in the location and this app will locate Mikvot in that city or town. You can click on the Mikvah to find out more details, such as an address, phone numbers, schedules and more. The address and phone numbers are clickable and work directly in the iPhone or iPod Touch. If a Mikvah is not in our database or we have the wrong data for a Mikvah, you can easily let us know and we will update it.

Vestos or Taharas HaMishpacha Schedule

Keeping track of your pure and unpure days is a complex task. We provide a do-it-yourself Vestos or Taharas HaMishpacha calendar to aid in that process. You can track your period, clean days, days you went to the mikvah, yom hachodesh, yom hafagah, onah beinonis, beddikas, add notes and much more in this calendar. I do warn you, this calendar does not automatically calculate which days you are not pure. We asked several Rabbinical authorities and they all suggested that we do not add this feature in, due to the obligation for women to track this by hand. The schedule we provide is a great visual way of tracking these days and help you figure out your ‘clean’ and ‘unclean’ days.

Mikvah Zmanim

Knowing when you can prepare for the Mikvah and when you can go to the Mikvah are important details. Knowing when you can perform a “Hefseik Tahara” or Bedika are other important factors. Knowing when to immerse in the Mikvah and when Sunset is, all matter. We offer a Zmanim feature to give you the times based on your GPS location or a predefined set of locations, for all these actions. You can check future dates or different locations, just in case you are preparing to travel or preparing for a Yom Tov.

Family Purity Guidelines

Rabbi Yitzchok Jaeger has provided his complete Guidelines to Family Purity book, in digital format to be included in this application. Knowing the Jewish laws and details of Taharas HaMishpacha can be very complex. Having a quick way to look up the laws can be very useful. Rabbi Jaeger’s book can be browsed and searched by keyword. You can quickly look up the laws of family purity with this application. Plus, we give you a quick way to buy the book – which we highly recommend every Jewish home has a copy of, via the application.

Mikvah Checklist

In addition to everything else listed above, we have a Mikvah checklist. This interactive checklist comes with dozens of things to remember to bring to the Mikvah and items you should remember while preparing for the Mikvah. You can add your own, remove others and reorder them, as you like.

Contacts

Having your Rabbi’s phone number, or your local Mikvah ladies information at hand, can be important. This is also built directly into the application.

Privacy

Privacy is one of the laws of Taharas HaMishpacha and we take this seriously. You can quickly set a password to open the application. This way, if your child gains access to your iPhone or iPod Touch, they won’t be able to see what this application is all about (source: RustyBrick).

They are usually said on fast days, and also said during the period preceding Yom Kippur.

In the Sephardic tradition, Selichot are said beginning with the month of Elul, through Yom Kippur to help worshipers direct their hearts and minds to the process of teshuvah, repentance. At the Selichot service, worshipers begin to examine their deeds of the past year, seeking forgiveness from G-d, and promising to improve their behavior in the New Year.

In the Ashkenazic tradition, Selichot are begun at a time such that there will be ten daily opportunities for their recitation before and including Yom Kippur. This is based on the custom, once prevalent, that Jews would fast for ten days (eating at night) before and including Yom Kippur.

In general, the proper time to say Selichot are at the end of the night, just before the morning, since this time is considered, according to Jewish Mysticism, a specially favorable time, in terms of the presence and closeness of G-d. Hence, selichot are typically recited in the early morning, before the daily shacharit service.

The Kaddish is said from the day of burial, daily for the first eleven months, and on the anniversary of the death.

The recitation of the Kaddish is one of the primary ritual observances of Jewish mourning practice, and is recited by mourners during each of the three daily services in the synagogue.

Davka Corporation just released iKaddish 1.0 for iPhone.

iKaddish displays the text of the Kaddish in the original Aramaic and English transliteration, and chants the text, highlighting each word as it is pronounced. Users can pause after each screen, tap and listen again, or go forward to the next section. iKaddish includes the text and audio of the Mourner’s Kaddish, as well as the longer Rabbis’ Kaddish, in both Sephardic and Ashkenazic pronunciations.

iKaddish also contains an explanatory section about the Kaddish that includes the English translation, as well as additional information about its recitation.

There was a time, not too long ago, just going back a few years really when you couldn’t find Perek Shirah at all. Many Rabbis didn’t even know about this t’filah. It had been hidden from us for hundreds of years. But the time has come for Perek Shirah to be revealed once again.

Perek Shirah is the song that is sung every day by all of Hashem’s creations in the realms of “domem” (i.e. the still, e.g. a rock), “tzomeyach” (i.e. the botanic, e.g. a flower) and “chai” (i.e. the animal kingdom, e.g. a lion). It is believed to have been authored by none-other than King David himself, who (like the Holy Ba’al Shem Tov) had the power to converse with animals.

Perek Shirah (Hebrew פרק שירה, lit. “Chapter of Song”) is an ancient Jewish text. It contains 84 sections, in each of which elements of creation, beginning with the celestial and ending with dogs, use biblical and rabbinic verses in order to sing G-d’s praises.

Use of Perek Shirah used to be prevalent in the daily liturgy and medieval philosopher Joseph Albo wrote that whoever recites Perek Shirah is guaranteed a place in the World to Come. Though Perek Shirah means “Chapter of Songs”, the book is actually organized into six chapters. Many of the utilized verses make mention of the speaker. For example, the song begins with the heavens who say, “the heavens speak of the glory of G-d, and of His handiwork the skies tell.” (Psalms 19:2) This, however is not a rule, as the book ends with the dogs who say “come, let us prostrate and bend our knees, and kneel before G-d our maker” (Psalms 95:2). Though this mentions an action that dogs physically perform, it doesn’t specifically mention them by name. It also includes verses based upon actions, such as giving the reaction of a cat before and after it catches a mouse as well as the response of the mouse.

The vast majority of the verses of Perek Shirah are biblical, and most of these are from the book of Psalms, but there are also a few verses from the Babylonian Talmud.

Rabbi Chaim ben Attar (1696-1742), aka the “Ohr haChayim” haKadosh, commented (Breishit 3:1) that everything Hashem created has its own system of speech with which to praise Hashem “... and go learn this from Perek Shira“.

Rebbe Levi Yitzchak of Berditchev (1740-1810) noted that “…if a man wants one of the nations of the world to change their attitude positively towards Israel (the Jews), then if that man knows the song of the nations’ angel that sings and praises Hashem, then that ministering angel has to love that man who knows his unique song to Hashem, and because he loves that Holy Jew the angel is compelled to do his will… therefore he who recites Perek Shira is great!”

Rebbe Nachman of Breslov (1772-1810) says “Know that each shepherd has a special tune according to the grass and according to the location that the shepherd is – because all grasses have a song. This is the concept of Perek Shira. From the song of the grass a beautiful melody of the shepherd is being made” (sources: perekshira.org, Wikipedia, Illumination by Shemm Ben-Shlomo).
