Rummikub®

Rummikub® was invented by Ephraim Hertzano, a Romanian-born Jew, who emigrated to Mandate Palestine in the early 1930s.  He hand-made the first sets with his family in the backyard of his home. The game combines elements of rummy, dominoes, mah-jongg and chess.

Hertzano sold the first sets door-to-door and on a consignment basis at small shops. Over the years, the family licensed it to other countries and it became Israel’s #1 export game. In 1977, it became a bestselling game in the United States.

In Hertzano’s ‘Official Rummikub Book’, published in 1978, he describes three different versions of the game: American, Sabra and International. Modern Rummikub® sets include only the Sabra version rules, with no mention of the others, and there are variations in the rules between publishers.

The game was first made by Lemada Light Industries Ltd, founded by Hertzano.

Soulbit7, the Israeli-based iOS application workshop, announces the immediate availability of  Look-Up, their latest iPhone app. Look-Up is an augmented reality (AR) game, where the player fights alien spaceships that enter the real environment that player is situated in.

Look-Up makes use of the iPhone camera and compass to create a unique alien invasion experience where the player fights UFOs that attack in the player’s real surroundings.

In 360 mode, the player engages with alien spaceships attacking from various points in his/her physical environment – by moving the device up, down, left and right, the player discovers the location of invading ships in a physical and unique playing experience. 180 mode reduces the playing zone to an area more manageable in the sitting position. Multiplayer mode allows more than one player to fight a battle together in a given physical space, making a truly social augmented reality gaming experience.

Each one of the letters is represented by an imagery which resembles its form and begins in the same letter it represents. For example: The letter “Dalet” – “Dachlil” (scarecrow – the letter Dalet is designed as a scarecrow whose name starts with the letter “Dalet”).

Pronunciation help – The application features the special PRONUNCE button for each letter.

Linking the letter’s name, shape and pronunciation creates a reflex in the child, in a way that every time s/he sees the letter “Dalet”, s/he would see the scarecrow in his minds eyes and the sound of the letter would come to his/hers ears. This link helps the child remember the letters: every time s/he sees them – he learns them.

Additionally,  each letter imagery is followed by a short story taken from the imagery world of the child. This story helps to strengthen the link between the letter and its pronunciation.

The content of this application was written by education-expert Naomi Shoshani, an MA in expressional therapy and a qualified didactic diagnostic teacher, with a track record of 26 years in teaching, most of them in corrective-teaching.

Naomi has been working for many years in instilling reading and writing to first grade’s students. The ideas and method behind this application is the result of continuous search for different ways to assist her pupils acquire reading skills.
