“When Matisse dies,” Pablo Picasso remarked in the 1950s, “Chagall will be the only painter left who understands what color really is.” As a pioneer of modernism and one of the greatest figurative artists of the twentieth century, Marc Chagall achieved fame and fortune, and over the course of a long career created some of the best-known and most-loved paintings of our time. Yet behind this triumph lay struggle, heartbreak, bitterness, frustration, lost love, exile—and above all the miracle of survival.

Born into near poverty in Russia in 1887, the son of a Jewish herring merchant, Chagall fled the repressive “potato-colored” tsarist empire in 1911 for Paris. There he worked alongside Modigliani and Léger in the tumbledown tenement called La Ruche, where “one either died or came out famous.” But turmoil lay ahead—war and revolution; a period as an improbable artistic commissar in the young Soviet Union; a difficult existence in Weimar Germany, occupied France, and eventually the United States.

Throughout, as Jackie Wullschlager makes plain in this groundbreaking biography, he never ceased giving form on canvas to his dreams, longings, and memories. His subject, more often than not, was the shtetl life of his childhood, the wooden huts and synagogues, the goatherds, rabbis, and violinists—the whole lost world of Eastern European Jewry.

Wullschlager brilliantly describes this world and evokes the characters who peopled it: Chagall’s passionate, energetic mother, Feiga-Ita; his eccentric fellow painter and teacher Bakst; his clever, intense first wife, Bella; their glamorous daughter, Ida; his tough-minded final companion and wife, Vava; and the colorful, tragic array of artist, actor, and writer friends who perished under the Stalinist regime.

Wullschlager explores in detail Chagall’s complex relationship with Russia and makes clear the Russian dimension he brought to Western modernism. She shows how, as André Breton put it, “under his sole impulse, metaphor made its triumphal entry into modern painting,” and helped shape the new surrealist movement. As art critic of the Financial Times, she provides a breadth of knowledge on Chagall’s work, and at the same time as an experienced biographer she brings Chagall the man fully to life—ambitious, charming, suspicious, funny, contradictory, dependent, but above all obsessively determined to produce art of singular beauty and emotional depth.

Drawing upon hitherto unseen archival material, including numerous letters from the family collection in Paris, and illustrated with nearly two hundred paintings, drawings, and photographs, Chagall is a landmark biography to rank with Hilary Spurling’s Matisse and John Richardson’s Picasso (from the Hardcover edition).

About the Author
Jackie Wullschlager is chief art critic for the Financial Times. Her books include a prizewinning life of Hans Christian Andersen and an acclaimed group biography of children’s book writers, Inventing Wonderland (from the Hardcover edition).

Piven, winner of Time Magazine’s, ”One of Ten in Best Children’s Books” and straight off the pages of Rolling Stone, The New York Times, and The Washington Post, says about Faces iMake:

“I wanted Faces iMake to be a virtual workshop with me and reflect what happens in the real world when you work with objects. Therefore you can rotate and move objects around but you cannot resize them. This limitation which might seem annoying at first makes you become more resourceful and creative.
About Hanoch Piven

Hanoch Piven (b. August 21, 1963 in Montevideo, Uruguay) is an Israeli mixed media artist best known for his celebrity caricatures. was born in Uruguay and raised in Israel. He came to the United States in 1987 and graduated from the School of Piven Visual Arts, in New York, in 1992. Piven returned to Israel in 1995, where he began writing and illustrating for the daily Haaretz.

His illustrated compositions are assembled from common objects and scraps of materials, including items which might be associated with the subject (for example, using bologna and liquor bottles to create Boris Yeltsin for Haaretz in 2000 or brains, magnifying glasses and electrical wire to create Stephen Hawking for Die Weltwoche in 2006).

His caricatures appear in Time, Newsweek, Rolling Stone, The Atlantic Monthly, The Times, and Entertainment Weekly, among other publications.

In 2003, Piven began conducting international workshops in such cities as Barcelona, Buenos Aires, Toronto and others. The workshops follow the principles of Piven’s own collage technique and encourage young people to experiment with common day-today objects and pieces of the world around them to create their own works of art.

Camille Pissarro (July 10, 1830 to November 13, 1903) was a popular French Impressionist painter (born to Jewish parents). Pissarro’s importance in the history of art resides not only in his visual contributions to Impressionism and Post-Impressionism, but as well in his patriarchal standing among his colleagues, particularly Paul Cézanne and Paul Gauguin. Camille Pissarro is recognized largely today as one of the most important painters in the history of the art form.

The Camille Pissarro Virtual Art Gallery features twenty-two high quality renderings of his works with two different modes. The Virtual Gallery mode allows you to quickly click your way through his extensive body of artwork. And the Thumbnail Gallery mode allows you to easily pick and choose which works of art you would like to select for viewing.

This virtual art gallery is highly recommended for those who are fans of Camille Pissarro, and also for all art lovers in general.

Camille Pissarro was a French impressionist painter, born to Jewish parents who owned a dry goods store at St. Thomas at Charlotte Amalie. While he was studying in Paris, his art teacher told him to explore his skills as an artist.

His parents did not understand his interest in art, so he ran away from home with a Danish artist, Fritz Melbye. Under Melbye’s direction, Pissarro made countless paintings. Once his parents accepted his will to be an artist, he returned home only to leave it again and go to Paris to study art.
